The Vedas, India's oldest ancient scriptures, teach Vedanta as a philosophy. Its core message is that our true essence is divine. Every being contains God, the fundamental truth. Religion is thus a quest for self-awareness, a quest for the God within. Shankaracharya's Advaita, Ramanujacharya's Vishishta Advaita, and Madhwacharya's Dvaita are the three sub-branches of Vedanta. The Upanishads are the foundation of Uttara Mimamsa (the end portions of Vedas).
