The Roman Catholic church controlled Christianity in Europe in the early 16th century, but the institution was beginning to reveal flaws. Tensions rose, protests got louder, and the Protestant Reformation was born. Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg church door, but the Reformation didn't start with him and surely didn't conclude with him. Today, we'll examine at how and why the Catholic church in Europe divided into two sects, then into a slew of others.
