Ibn Battuta set off for Mecca with the expectation of staying for a little more than two years, maybe three if he took his time. He had no idea that he wouldn't see his hometown or city again for another 24 years. In that time, he will have traversed nearly the whole Islamic world, covering over 75,000 miles and writing a travelogue that academics now use to better comprehend the world of the 15th century.
