Belisarius has long been regarded as one of history's greatest tacticians, despite his name not being as widely known as it once was. The 6th century general recaptured enormous swaths of Western Roman territory, from northern Africa to the Italian peninsula, under Byzantine emperor Justinian I. Despite being outnumbered and commanding a diverse collection of troops, he considerably increased the Byzantine empire's footprint at a period when many believed Rome's original territories had been irreversibly lost.
