Michael Safi, a Guardian India correspondent, takes a trip along the Yamuna River. The water is crystal clean at its source in the Himalayas, stretching 855 miles (1,375 kilometres) across the north of the country. However, after it passes through New Delhi, it becomes one of the world's filthiest rivers. Part of the problem is due to rapid urbanisation, but there is also a lack of enforcement of rules against illegal dumping.
