After saffron and vanilla, green cardamom is the world's third most costly spice. It costs roughly $9 for 100 grammes of the spice. To create 1 kilogramme of green cardamom, harvesters must manually pick 6 kg of raw pods. However, just because a few pods from the same tree are ripe does not guarantee that they will all be. This is why each pod has to be hand-picked. So, why is green cardamom so difficult to grow? Is that the reason for the high price?
