The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in the United States, if not the world. However, it has undergone a significant ideological and geographic development over its almost 180-year history. Originally a firm supporter of Southern slavery, the party today has a majority of nonwhite voters on its side. The party, which was formerly a champion of rural interests against coastal elites, now derives a large portion of its support from cities and coastal areas.
